Introduction

Steve Bales, President

Welcome to Bales Mold Service's first issue of On the Surface for 2009. We're pleased to send you updates about our company along with useful information geared toward showing you how to reduce manufacturing costs and improve production. We hope you enjoy this issue.

By the way, if you are heading to NPE2009, which will be held June 22 – 26 at McCormick Place in Chicago, stop by the Bales booth, No. W101002, in the West Hall. We'll be happy to meet personally with you to discuss the advantages of our products and services. Also, enter our raffle to win a Pocket SPI Mold Finish Guide! One will be given away daily! If you'd like to make an appointment prior to the show, call us at 800-215-MOLD (6653). We hope to see you there.

Meet Matt Adams, Midwest Sales Rep

Matt Adams, Midwest Sales Rep

If you haven't met him already, Matt Adams is Bales' new man on the street, meeting with customers throughout the Midwest to assist them with selecting the best finishes and coatings for their production tooling.

Though he is fairly new to his role as Midwest Sales Representative, Matt is not new to Bales. He's been part of the team for more than nine years and has worked in just about every department in the plant. He's honed his skills with plating applications and polishing, as well as the many additional services Bales offers such as welding, and he can “talk shop” and consult with customers very effectively.

"Bales has always stressed the importance of bringing the plating and polishing vendor into a project early so that proper leadtimes can be met that save money," says Matt. "I'm available to help our customers take the steps necessary to ensure a successful mold build – not to mention proper maintenance down the line."

Contact Matt by emailing him at MAdams@balesmold.com, or call 800-215-MOLD (6653).

New Technologies at Bales

Bales always strives to incorporate the latest technologies into their products in order to provide the very best quality customer service. The latest addition to Bales' Quality Department is an Atomic Absorption Machine that examines the plating baths to ensure proper chemical levels are maintained and that there are no impurities. In addition, this machine can analyze the waste stream down to parts per billion so that Bales' processes remain very accurately compliant with industry standards.

Not only can Bales Mold Service plate tool steel, aluminum, stainless steel, CRS, copper, brass and Beryllium (BECU), we have the capacity to safely and completely remove any coating materials from these substrates, too!

Smart Preventive Maintenance Customers Will Value

As we know, rotating cores and other mold actions have a tendency to gall, causing unnecessary downtime that could have been avoided with a simple and smart preventive maintenance strategy implemented during the mold build: pre-engineered chrome build-ups.

During the mold build, undersize the cores by 0.004” per side and let Bales apply the hard chrome build-up. When the cores or other parts are finish machined they will be protected and their life extended, saving your customers valuable time and expense for the life of the tool.

In an existing tool, where under sizing is not an option, an effective solution to galling is Bales' Diamond Chrome applied at 0.0002 - 0.0003 per side. Its hardness factor is comparable to Titanium Nitride, plus it can be applied at much lower temperatures (130 degrees vs. Titanium Nitride's 800 – 1,000 degrees), ensuring the integrity of the mold's properties. Finally, Diamond Chrome can be plated in thicker deposits.
